I may be a reformed hater and other news

It's Wednesday!! That's not really news , now is it? Well, here I am , stuck on the couch with my son who has been out of school all week because of flu and pink eye that doesn't seem to be getting better. Both days, I took him outside, played, went shopping, and when I called the doctor today, they said that he needs to be inside, stationary, in bed or on a couch, watching spongebob or whatever it is they watch, and pushing fluids.

Needless to say, Eban is just as wiggly as I am, so this is going to be a long day for both of us. The second I get off the couch, he's wrestling with the dog. He's outside messing with the fish pond. He's running up and down the stairs and across the second story catwalk thing in the house. He must stay still. So to accomplish that, I must stay still.

So, I have decided to write a bloggy thing today and share a funny story.

Everyone who knows me knows that, relationship wise....eehh.....let's just say , I figured I was doomed to be alone and had accepted that after the last one went belly up. And by belly up I mean belly up, on a sidewalk in scorching sun, while cars drove by mud puddles and splashed you, and birds pecked your face and pigeons pooped on you and babies laughed at you as their mothers covered their eyes and stepped over you as they continued their happy perfect lives while even the Jehovas Witnesses figured handing you a flier would be a waste of resources. That kind of belly up.

Wait, sorry, I told you this would be a funny story.

Well, when I used to work in the international division at the airline, my favorite person to work on the early shift with was Joy because she was as cranky and pessimistic as I was and the only one who didn't think I was a jerk for not giving honeymooners a free upgrade.

Never mind the fact that the airline has an off-with-your-head policy about giving away free upgrades anyway, but in those cases, it really didn't bother me.

First of all, working all Carribean departures in the morning sucked because it was early. And I don't do early. So, I'm already cranky. Add to that my jaded opinion about starry-eyed love and touchy feely nauseating newlyweds, by the hundreds, every morning and you have a pretty hostile person working the gate.

In the summer, every single carribean flight seems to be booked with honeymooners. I mean the WHOLE flight. Because that's what you do, you get married in the summer and go honeymoon somewhere tropical.

My hostility was probably one part jealousy that I never got that traditional wedding and honeymoon experience I always wanted, one part mad that I didn't have the money to take myself to the carribean even though I could fly free and one part caffiene deficiency.

So here we are, me and Joy working the gate. We're totally inappropriate together.

I mean, the first ten couples checking in and saying they're on their honeymoon "wink wink" which in honeymooner speak means "can we have a free upgrade", were usually all we could take before we'd "go down to check the plane". And by "go down to check the plane" I mean gripe that why do they always want a free upgrade, I know they got tons of money as wedding gifts, and they don't care if we get fired over it and they're probably gonna get divorced within a year anyway," did you see that guy checking out that flight attendant while his new wife was getting coffeee OMG"

Yeah, I know. We were jerks. But in my defense, true love and that starry eyed goofy stuff never lasted for me. I never got forever after and the divorce rate in this country proves that not many other people do either. Then I'd blame it all on Disney because from birth, we're force fed this Prince Charming, Saving the Princess, beautiful ballgown, Cinderella happily ever after dream. And it didnt help that when I would go look in a reservation to adjust seats for these honeymooners, I'd see that the email that was used by Passenger Bob to pay for his ticket was DiscreetBobLovesBlondes@dirtymail.com (dont click that, it just did that by itself), his wife Lisa was a brunette and is explaining that these tickets were a surprise. Further more, when they fill out the personal data sheet at the gate on the back of the boarding pass, Bob has put his email address as BobLovesLisaForeverAtYahoo.com. As Lisa is getting coffee, Bob won't stop staring at the flight attendant's bum as the crew is checking in at the desk.

Seriously, it's just crap, right?! That's what I thought.

So Joy and I made up a drinking game to deal with our sarcasm. We knew it was wrong to be mean to these kids just starting out. We knew some of them would make it. We knew it was none of our business and who are we to take away from their joy. Well I knew that. I am not sure if Joy was on board with giving a crap or not, because usually she was on the phone with payroll about them shorting her twelve cents and they were interrupting her call by checking in.

Anyway, we invented a fake drinking game. At the beginning of our shift, we would decide what "drink" we were having. And every time honeymooners would check in and do the wink wink honeymoon thing, we'd have eye contact and have a mental shot. Then we'd be mentally wasted by the time the flight left the gate. It seems kind of pointless but the game made it kind of tolerable and it was a way we could get our kicks when we'd rather purposefully seperate the honeymooners across the plane from each other. One time Joy got so mentally wasted she pulled the bridge off the plane and shut the door and left me on it and I didnt figure it out until it was pushing back. But that's another story.

Again, I can't speak for Joy but I hated the honeymooners. They came in droves and they represented reminders to me of all the failed relationships I'd barrelled through and I thought it was unfair that I never got that and I never would. I'm pretty sure Joy's irritation stemmed from having more profitable things to do like that smarte cart over there someone left and the free quarter that pops out of the return bin that has her name ALL OVER IT. OH wait, you have another question? Someone else has noticed the smarte carte. Well you just cost Joy a quarter, so good luck with getting out of the middle seat.

( I love Joy, and because she is still probably terrorizing passengers with the airline's own policies, I made her name totally different and also read the disclaimer at the bottom)

Anyway I also hadn't watched romantic comedies or The Notebook in years. Any date I had, I'd tell them I wanted to watch a bloody action flick or lots of blowing things up. I claimed to be emotionally unreachable and I acted obnoxious because I didn't want to be dumped, I wanted to make sure I'd never get hurt again. Whatever it took to get the Disney Dreams away.

And now here we are....planning a wedding....and a honeymoon....and because it would be way too hypocritical for me to ask my airline friends to upgrade me (flight 733, London to Charlotte, July 20 ahem) we will use money or miles to get that upgrade.

Haha,so, here I am, I am Shannon, and I was a Hater turned Honeymooner. Joy, what are you drinking??

HAHA!! Love you all!!

DISCLAIMER TIME!! Allright, I totally made this up, it's complete fiction, and if anyone from any airline reads this hoping to get "Joy" in trouble, I would like to point out that I am completely full of crap and totally lying. PS you can't prove it.
Snuggles!!

Another sunny afternoon

Good morning everyone!! Do you love that flower? I do, it makes me feel sunny and happy so why not share the love? So I know this blog has more of a "Shannon is feeling chatty" feeling than a "Shannon and David are getting married" feeling, so I kind of apologize, but then again not really because it's kind of my bloggy thingy. So, to keep people who don't feel like wading through all this stuff and just want the hard details about the wedding, I will make sure to make the title clear or have some kind of classification system.

Spring is Here!!!

We are having a really pretty day here in Charlotte!!
Natalie has the day off of school because of the holiday, but Kendall and Eban had school because they had to make-up snow days they took off several weeks ago. I don't know why Natalie's private school is different, but whatever.

Eban ended up staying home from school today with a slight fever, but felt better around lunchtime. I decided the sun could do everyone some good, so we walked a few blocks to the train station and met David for lunch. Here they are messing around!

The sun was shining so brightly and we found flowers in bloom, flowers thinking of blooming, and flowers fully opened!! It's like I blinked and missed it!!! I took some photographs of our lovely lunch out! I'm so excited because Spring always brings new beginnings and I'm especially excited about the new beginning that is happening June 18th!

Here is Natalie blowing the first feathery seeds off a dandelion!! Hope everyone else is having as beautiful of a day as we are!!!

Meet the Parents - SUCCESS!!

This is a picture of the church I took in Old Town on our Albuquerque Trip!!
So, "Meet the Parents" went well this week for David out in Albuquerque!! And we were able to pick out a very unique and special wedding band for him in an Old Town Jewelry store!! It was great!! David was a little overwhelmed, understandably, when he walked into my grandma's house and my entire immediate family on my mom's side was there and all very eager to meet him. He did great, though and got lots of hugs. My brother told him lots of embarrassing stories and we all learned that the biggest thing about Shannon is not to tell her what to do (because I will do the opposite) HA!!!

Well, he learned that really quickly and I learned not to step on his toes so we have a beautiful understanding and balance.

Here's the link to the wedding announcement, for some reason when I try to build it into the HTML it isn't working so just copy and paste into your browser if you really wanna see it. This photo was done by PhotosbyJeni but apparently the newspaper clipped the stamp off. Sorry Jeni. The people who see it are in New Mexico so they're unlikely to fly up here anyway but I gotta give credit where credit is due. Jeni Buchanan took that picture and if you love it you should hire her!!

Love you all, see you in June!! (less than four months OMG!)

Valentine's Day with the Family!

I can't believe it's Valentine's Day! I completely forgot about it because with David, it really seems like every day is Valentines Day and it seems excessive to get EXTRA love!!!

David is actually out of town right now (Can you believe his work had an out of town conference that started on Valentine's Day?!) That can't have gone over well with some people. I bet that started some fights.

I put these cute little bugs from Hallmark in front of the kids' doors this morning so that when they woke up they had some Valentines love! They were full of cute little things like money, lip gloss, a card, and candy. Eban got a little stuffed animal that is cute but if you turn it inside out it makes a scary face. So that when he's in a cranky mood, he can turn his friend inside out and they can be all mad together. I can't promise that it won't make me laugh though which will make him even more mad. It's so cute. Ha ha.

Our little Eban has a bit of social anxiety. He will meet people and then give them the five minute freezout. He won't respond, he just kinda pulls his lip in and avoids eye contact. But give him just a bit, and he won't be able to stop.

Bailey, the next youngest, is extremely social. She doesn't know a stranger, she'll walk right up and give you a giant hug!

Natalie is the sweetheart, her father has called her Weaslemonkey since she was a baby because if there is some snuggle action going on, she will somehow work her way right into the mix before you've figured it out.

Kendall always makes me laugh. Always. She has very quick wit and has mastered the art of sarcasm just like her dad. Sometimes after everyone else has stopped laughing, I'll think of something she said and start laughing again. She definitely got her father's sense of humor.

So , those people are my Valentines today!! I am making a special dinner tonight for them but I don't know exactly what yet. It'll be yummy though!!

The girls went with us to pick out wedding bands a few days ago....my wedding band is ...breathtaking.

They also went with me to pick out my dress, some of my jewelry, my shoes, the venue , and the kids will be with us for our cake and dinner tasting.

This wedding is truly more than just a couple coming together, it is the marriage of a family. A really fun, perfectly blended, potluck of personalities.

Happy Valentine's Day everyone! Give everyone you love snuggles!!!!
Thanks for all the RSVPS...I'm thrilled!!!

The Story of Us!

Our Story.....

"So, how did you all meet?"

Well, we get asked that a lot!! At first, we were embarrassed to say how we met...we would come up with all kinds of silly stories to tell people and when we'd get confronted with the question, we figured we'd pull from "the inventory" of goofy scenarios.

We never really got the stones to do that though, but we always bashfully would answer "Match.com". It seemed kind of embarrassing, but I can't really pinpoint why. I mean, a lot of people are meeting that way, and it's actually a pretty responsible approach to finding companionship as opposed to drinking a little liquid confidence and trying out your social skills at a bar.

So, yep, that's how it happened. We both signed up on Match.com. He found me, messaged me and I was immediately attracted by his kind note. It was the first one I recieved and the only one I felt compelled to reply to. In the midst of all kinds of unsolicited "winks" that I either had to "wink back" or "say no thank you" it was a very welcome little note, simply saying he liked my answers to my profile and wondered if I wanted to have coffee or call sometime.

So, that's what we did. We met at a Starbucks on Arrowood Road for coffee. I had arranged for babysitting for an hour (including travel time). The meeting lasted like three or four hours. Inseperable ever since.

On our one year anniversary, we went back to that Starbucks and sat at that very same table, and as long as we're in Charlotte, we'll continue to do so.

It did take a while for us to blend our families, but everything obviously clicked.

Now, we are also official spokespeople for Match.com, and we appear in their internet advertisements!!! How exciting!!

131 more days til the big day!! (yay!) See everyone soon!!!

All The Pretty Pictures....

Hello again!! So if you are friends with us on facebook, I'm sure you've seen the picture assault that has taken over our pages....that was a photo shoot that we modeled for, and we just happened to benefit from the services of ten photographers - with some of those shots going to Carolina Bride Magazine for submission for a feature...(Jeni is brilliant, she organized the whole thing)

Anyway, if you haven't seen those pictures, I will post a few of them, spreading them out througout posts!! They're just beautiful and I can't thank these ten individuals enough whose creative eye and technical talent somehow immortalized our warm fuzzies and captured them on film!

Did you guys know that David and I are in official advertisements for Match.com? Yep, that's where we met!! Online!! Crazy, isn't it? I'll tell you our story on here sometime when it's not late and my eyes aren't as droopy.

Speaking of eyes, I think they are going to be leaking through the whole ceremony seriously, I'm thinking my makeup artist Subreen is gonna have to be trailing behind me all night fixing running mascara, and my photographers are going to be getting a thousand angles of a red faced, over the moon, rediculously happy but very emotional Shannon. I hope I can keep it under control. I'm so happy!!!

Also, I'm super excited about bringing Carolyn Shephard Design Group onboard as my official planners/florist, actually Carolyn herself is handling it and she's a dreammmmmmmmm come trueee.....I get overwhelmed with decisions, too many choices, paralysis by analysis....whatever...anyway she is on top of it, and her ideas are brilliant.

You all are going to be treated to a wonderful evening!

SO EXCITED!!!!!

Wedding and Hotel Information

Hey everyone!! The invites are all sent, so here and the facebook page is where I will update the information you'll need if you're coming from out of town.

Charlotte Douglas International Airport is the airport here , with an easy identifier to search for flights with (CLT)

Our wedding is held at the Ritz-Carlton in uptown Charlotte, which is at the center of the city. We do have a block of rooms for our guests, the rate is $199 per night using rate code DBBDBBA. This code is what you use booking on the RitzCarlton.com/Charlotte website. It is the most expensive though, so there are plenty of others within seconds.

There are lots of hotels uptown to choose from, some of the nicest include the
Omni
Westin
and the Marriott Center City

There are lots of tasty restaurants and fun places to hang out uptown (some call it downtown...it is kind of an endearing debate around here which is correct)

Directly across from the Ritz Carlton is the Epicentre, which is a really trendy spot with family entertainment like Strike City, the Mez Epicentre Theatres, and clubs if you're into dancing.

You will also find a Cedar Fair park , similar to a Six Flags called Carowinds, which is an easy 15 minute drive from the city's center. The park is situated on the border of NC and SC and has GREAT rides. Our kids are season pass holders!

There are also museums like the Mint Museum of Art

If you like the outdoors, The US Whitewater Center is also ten minutes south on I-85 from uptown. It is the official training facility for the US Olympic Whitewater team!
http://usnwc.org/

These are just a few fun things Charlotte has to offer if you are spending some vacation time with us - whether you brought kids or not!

Speaking of children, there will be a handful of them in attendance from just little babies to teenagers, so please know that when your invitation came, it included your children.

That's all I have for right now, please feel free to email me at sdp1108@gmail.com or friend me on facebook if you haven't already. For those of you in the UK, you can RSVP via email or facebook since I didn't have any of your stamps to include on the return envelope.

Can't wait to see/meet all of you!!!

-Shannon
